More information: https:\/\/wasp-sweden.org\/graduate-school\/\nProject Description\nThe project focuses on the design and analysis of modes of operation for symmetric-key cryptography, including, but not limited to, message authentication codes, pseudorandom functions, encryption schemes, permutation-based functions, hash functions, and hash-based signatures, for applications such as quantum-safe and post-quantum cryptography, as well as leakage- and tampering-resistant cryptography. The project is supervised by Assistant Professor Mustafa Khairallah. The research is expected to include a mix of theory and practice. The selected students will be part of the Department of Computing Science at Ume\u00e5 University, as well as WASP's graduate school.\nPossible research directions include:\nDesign and analysis of leakage-resistant encryption schemes with variable length, focusing on stream ciphers and wide-block ciphers (permutation-based modes).\nTheoretical analysis of emerging modes of operation and emerging threat models.\nStudies of security notions, attacks, and proofs for hash-based signatures, with focus on physical attacks.\n\nQualifications\nTo be admitted to doctoral-level education, the applicant must have basic eligibility through a completed degree at the advanced level, or completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, of which at least 60 credits are at the advanced level, or equivalent foreign education, or equivalent qualifications.\nTo be admitted to doctoral-level education in the subject of computer science, the applicant must have completed courses of at least 90 higher education credits in computer science or directly relevant to the current specialization. Specifically for this position, it is required that you:\nhave documented knowledge of cryptography concepts.\nhave documented knowledge of probability theory, programming, and linear algebra.\ncan read and write mathematical proofs and cryptographic analyses.\nhave strong academic English proficiency.\n\nFor directions 1 and 3, it is meritorious if you:\nhave experience with hardware implementation, hardware description languages, and\/or FPGA implementation.\nhave experience with side-channel attacks against cryptosystems.\nhave experience with cryptographic implementation, such as software and\/or hardware implementation of cryptographic algorithms (not limited to symmetric-key algorithms).\n\nFor direction 2, it is meritorious if you:\nhave experience with algorithms, computational theory, quantum computing, and discrete mathematics.\nhave experience with design or analysis of modes of operation (including implementation work). Knowledge of cryptography can be demonstrated through official course transcripts from bachelor's and master's studies or equivalent, a thesis, or published research articles.\n\nAbout the Position\nThe employment is aimed at a doctoral degree, and the PhD student's primary task is to engage in doctoral studies, which includes participation in research projects and doctoral courses. Teaching and other departmental duties (up to a maximum of 20%) may be included in the work tasks. The employment is limited to four years full-time or up to five years with part-time teaching.\nSalary placement follows the established salary schedule for PhD student employment.
