The project offers a unique opportunity to work together with leading researchers and industrial partners while contributing to solving one of the central technical challenges of the energy transition.\n\nAs a doctoral candidate at Lule\u00e5 University of Technology, you will receive qualified supervision, access to advanced research infrastructure, and excellent opportunities to develop into an internationally recognized researcher.\n\nField Description\nMining and Rock Engineering encompasses mining engineering, rock engineering, and rock mechanics, including rock mass properties, tunnel construction technology, design and dimensioning of mines and rock facilities, and planning and production processes related to both mining operations and infrastructure development.\n\nProject Description\nFor this doctoral position in Mining and Rock Engineering, the research will focus on developing engineered underground hydrogen storage in lined rock caverns (LRC) constructed in hard crystalline rock. The research includes:\n- developing coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical numerical models to simulate injection, storage, and extraction of hydrogen;\n- evaluating how operational loads affect the integrity of steel liners, concrete, and surrounding rock;\n- developing reference designs for lined rock caverns with various storage capacities and scaling methods;\n- assessing site-specific performance under different geological conditions and providing recommendations for the design of future demonstration projects.\n\nThe project is carried out in close collaboration between Lule\u00e5 University of Technology, the Geological Survey of Sweden (SGU), and several Swedish industrial partners. The hired doctoral candidate will work closely with researchers specializing in rock mechanics, underground construction, geophysics, and geology, and will have regular contact with industrial stakeholders.\n\nDuties\nAs a doctoral candidate you will:\n- conduct independent research through numerical modeling, laboratory experiments, and field investigations;\n- participate in site investigations and data collection in northern Sweden;\n- develop methods for evaluating suitable storage sites and optimizing the design of lined rock caverns;\n- publish research results in leading international scientific journals;\n- present research at national and international conferences;\n- complete the research education courses required for a doctoral degree.\n\nThe majority of your working time will be devoted to research education. Depending on the department's needs, you may also have the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and supervision.\n\nYou will become a member of the Network of Young Scientists (NYS) within CH2ESS, which organizes workshops, field excursions, interdisciplinary networking activities, and professional development activities.\n\nQualifications\nFor eligibility, a master's degree or equivalent is required in one of the following areas:\n- Rock Mechanics\n- Civil Engineering (with a focus on geotechnical engineering or underground construction)\n- Mining Engineering\n- Strength of Materials\n- Other related fields.\n\nGood knowledge of numerical modeling of rock and underground structures is required.
