The group is led by Wei Ouyang and combines wet lab work with automated experimental platforms and AI-driven analysis tools.\nWe are opening two biology-focused doctoral positions in biological physics to study cell biology alongside colleagues working on automation, computation, and AI-driven analysis. Projects will be designed in consultation with each doctoral candidate at the start of studies based on scientific interests.\nAs a PhD candidate you will:\nDesign and conduct experimental cell biology work \u2014 including cell culture, perturbation studies, microscopy, and related molecular biology methods.\nInterpret results biologically and advance scientific questions.\nCollaborate with colleagues working on automation, computation, and AI-driven analysis.\nContribute to publications and scientific dialogue around cell and molecular biology.\n\nSupervision: Professor Hjalmar Brismar and Assistant Professor Wei Ouyang are proposed to supervise the doctoral candidate. Final decision will be made upon admission.\nEligibility for Admission\nTo be admitted to doctoral studies (Chapter 7, Section 39 of the Higher Education Ordinance), applicants must meet the basic eligibility requirements:\nHold an advanced degree, or\nHave completed at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 are at advanced level, or\nHave acquired equivalent knowledge in some other way within or outside the country.\n\nSpecial eligibility:\nDegree (or equivalent) in cell biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedicine, biophysics, or a related life science field.\n\nIn addition to the above, there is also a mandatory requirement for English equivalent to English B\/6.\nSelection\nTo succeed with your doctoral studies at KTH, you need to be goal-oriented and persistent in your work. When selecting candidates, the following abilities are assessed:\nIndependently advance your work,\nCollaborate with others,\nMaintain a professional approach, and\nAnalyze and work with complex questions.\nStrong biological foundation and genuine curiosity about cell and molecular biology.\nPractical experience with experimental biological work (cell culture, microscopy, molecular biology methods, or similar).\nAbility and willingness to collaborate in an interdisciplinary team that combines biology, automation, and AI-driven analysis.\nGood English communication skills \u2014 both for explaining biology and for collaborating across disciplinary boundaries.\nBasic programming or data analysis skills (Python\/R) are advantageous but not required.\n\nBeyond the eligibility requirements, great weight will be placed on personal qualities.\nTarget Degree: PhD\nInformation on Admission and Employment\nOnly those admitted to doctoral studies may be employed as a PhD candidate. The total employment period may not exceed what corresponds to full-time doctoral level education for four years. An employed PhD candidate may in limited scope (maximum 20%) perform certain tasks within, for example, education and administration.
