As a doctoral candidate with us, you will work closely with leading researchers in a strong and international research environment, with access to advanced laboratory equipment and excellent funding opportunities. You will be offered secure employment, high-quality supervision, and space to grow, both as a researcher and as a person.
The Department of Engineering Science and Mathematics conducts research in areas such as wood, composites, metals, mechanics, and energy. Our engineering programs include sustainable energy engineering and mechanical engineering. We have an international program in materials engineering, and among our newer educational programs is the engineering degree program in electrical power engineering. The strong collaboration with industry gives students the opportunity to work on real project assignments during their studies. We are now seeking a doctoral candidate who can help us further develop research in the field of Machine Elements. The primary purpose of the doctoral position is to strengthen the recently established research area of triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG)-based smart lubrication in Machine Elements. In addition to coursework, the doctoral candidate will primarily conduct experimental work.
The Department has approximately 300 employees and conducts research in 17 research subjects and seven centers of excellence. We have operations on campuses in Luleå, Skellefteå, and we also oversee research at Green Fuels in Piteå.
Subject Description
Machine Elements encompasses the analysis and optimization of machine components and component systems based on performance, service life, energy efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. Particular emphasis is placed on tribological issues.
Project Description
The project involves developing and applying TENG-based self-powered sensors or TENG-based methods for energy harvesting in tribological applications. A sensor that generates its own energy plays an important role in the development of wearable technology, Internet of Things, Industry 4.0, and more. The focus of this project is to apply this technology to machine components to provide information about operating status. This may include both general machine health and specific signals related to faults and failures. The project aims to develop knowledge and understanding of the relationship between tribological signals, particularly lubrication signals, and operating status.
Responsibilities
The doctoral candidate is expected to conduct both experimental and theoretical work within the framework of research studies and to communicate research results at national and international conferences and through scientific publications. Most of the doctoral candidate's working time will be devoted to their own research work. In addition to this, the doctoral candidate may have the opportunity to try their hand at teaching through instruction and other pedagogical tasks. As a researcher, the doctoral candidate acts as an independent and neutral party in many different contexts, which provides good opportunities to participate in qualified and challenging development projects.
Qualifications
You who apply for this position should hold a master's degree in natural science or engineering, for example materials science, chemistry, physics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent. Good ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is also a requirement.
The following selection criteria apply:
Background relevant to the project
The quality of the applicant's master's thesis
Personal qualities relevant to doctoral studies

Information
Employment as a doctoral candidate is time-limited for 4 years; teaching and other institutional duties may be added up to 20% of full-time. Place of work: Luleå. Intended start date by agreement.
For further information, you are welcome to contact: Professor Yijun Shi, 0920–492064, mailto:yijun.shi@ltu.se
https://www.ltu.se/om-universitetet/arbeta-hos-oss/att-soka-en-anstallning#h-Fackligakontaktpersoner
Application
We would appreciate it if you apply for this doctoral position by using the application button below. Your application should include a CV, personal letter, and copies of verified degree certificates from secondary school and university. Your application, including degree certificates, should be written in English or Swedish. Mark your application with the reference number below.
Application Deadline: August 10, 2026
Reference Number: 3871–2026
Är du redo att ta nästa steg i din akademisk resa?
