Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from around the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.\nAt the Department of Biology and Environmental Science (BioEnv), educational and research activities span from mountain ecosystems, through forests, soil and watercourses, all the way out to the sea. In these environments, we work with different biological organizational levels from genes, through individuals and populations to communities and ecosystems. We work within ecology, evolution, physiology, systematics and combinations of these subject areas to understand the significance of natural and human-caused environmental changes.\nThe department's activities are conducted at two different locations: GU's facilities in Natrium at Medicinaregatan 7B in Gothenburg and at Kristineberg Marine Research Station, which is operated by the Marine Infrastructure at University of Gothenburg. The projects examine the connections between global environmental changes and local changes in species communities, microclimate and greenhouse gas emissions. Data collection for the projects is largely done in the field and through laboratory experiments and analyses.\nDuties\nWe are now seeking a researcher to analyze, compile and evaluate a comprehensive metagenomic dataset regarding methane uptake in arctic tundra ecosystems. The work will include compilation and processing of genomic data together with methane flows and site-related metadata from several arctic locations, as well as writing scientific publications. Laboratory work will be performed at our facilities in Natrium in Gothenburg and will include, among other things, DNA extraction from problematic soils, next-generation sequencing, q\/PCR, bioinformatics, but may also include gas chromatography, carbon and nitrogen analyses and water analyses.\nQualifications\n\nThe applicant must have the following qualifications:\n\nPhD in natural sciences with a relevant focus or other higher education that the employer considers equivalent\nExperience with metagenomic analysis of tundra soil with high levels of inhibitors (extraction, qPCR, sequencing and bioinformatics) with a focus on microorganisms that produce and break down methane.\nExperience with meta-analysis to compile data from multiple sites regarding microorganisms, biotic factors (vegetation, soil health) and abiotic factors (temperature and soil moisture as well as meteorological parameters).\nSolid knowledge of arctic tundra ecosystems\nExperience measuring and analyzing natural greenhouse gas emissions\nHigh proficiency in the programming language R\n\nThe following qualifications are meritious but not required:\nExperience with plant ecological inventory methods\nExperience with laboratory work (DNA extraction, gas chromatography, carbon and nitrogen analyses and water analyses)\nExperience writing and publishing scientific texts in English\n\nPersonal competencies:\nThe work requires a person with great attention to detail, independence and initiative.
