Strong research and attractive education programs attract researchers and students from around the world. Through new knowledge and new perspectives, Gothenburg University contributes to a better future.
At the Department of Biomedicine, research and teaching are conducted in preclinical and clinical medical subjects. The department is divided into four divisions: infectious diseases, microbiology and immunology, medicinal chemistry and cell biology, and laboratory medicine. The department currently has approximately 315 employees and approximately 450 Mkr in revenue.
We are seeking a highly motivated and engaged researcher with a background in physiology and single-cell genomics for Dr. Joan Camuñas' research group. Dr. Joan Camuñas' research group operates at the intersection of genomics, biophysics, and precision medicine. Our goal is to develop experimental and computational methods to identify molecular mechanisms that lead to dysfunctional cellular states in human diseases (http://www.camunaslab.org).
The candidate will contribute to the further development of Slice-seq, a novel method for studying human pancreatic tissue sections by combining high-resolution calcium imaging with spatial transcriptomics. The researcher will develop methods to improve the viability of pancreatic tissue sections in culture and develop methods for cryopreservation and distribution of tissue sections. The researcher will also conduct single-cell genomic and spatial transcriptomic analyses of pancreatic tissue.
The project involves extensive interdisciplinary work in physiology, molecular biology, and pancreas biology. The research group is affiliated with the Wallenberg Centre for Molecular and Translational Medicine (WCMTM) and SciLifeLab at Gothenburg University and maintains close collaborations with a broad international network of researchers.

Responsibilities
Develop and perform high-resolution spatial transcriptomics in multiple tissue sections.
Perform high-resolution calcium imaging in acute pancreatic tissue sections.
Conduct single-cell protocols using automated high-capacity liquid handling equipment.
Develop methods to improve culture, cryopreservation, and distribution of acute tissue sections.
Analyze generated data and design and perform validation through tissue imaging and other functional measurements.
Lead the project, present results at group meetings and conferences, and write scientific articles based on research findings.
Contribute to mentoring and supervision of junior members of the research group.

Qualifications
Ideal candidates should have the following qualifications:
Doctorate degree in a relevant research field (e.g., physiology or molecular biology).
Highly motivated, proactive, and meticulous.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Experience working with acute pancreatic tissue sections.
Experience with experimental methods in spatial transcriptomics and single-cell genomics (experience with Parse is a merit).
Experience in pancreas biology.
Knowledge of various methods including cell culture, molecular biology, and biochemistry is a merit.
Strong ability to communicate orally and in writing in English is a requirement.

Employment
The position is full-time, fixed-term for 10 months, with placement at the Department of Biomedicine for the time being. Start date is by agreement.

Contact Information for the Position
If you have questions about the position, you are welcome to contact Dr. Joan Camuñas Soler, mailto:joan.camunas@gu.se

Trade Union Representatives
Trade union representatives at Gothenburg University can be found here: https://www.gu.se/jobba-hos-oss/sa-blir-du-en-av-oss#kollektivavtal-och-fackliga-foretradare

Application
You apply for the position through Gothenburg University's recruitment portal by clicking the "Apply" button. As an applicant, you are responsible for ensuring that your application is complete in accordance with the job posting and that it is submitted to the university by the final application deadline.
Application deadline: 2026-09-15

The university actively works for a work environment with equal conditions and values the qualities that diversity brings to its operations. The university applies individual salary setting. In accordance with the Swedish National Archives regulations, the university is obligated to retain application documents for two years after the appointment decision. If you as an applicant specifically request the return of your documents, they will be returned after the two-year period has elapsed; otherwise, they will be disposed of.
