Then this job is for you.\nThe oceanographic research unit has expertise in a range of areas related to marine research, including marine biology, marine observations, numerical modeling, and remote sensing. The unit consists of around 20 specialists in biological, chemical, and physical oceanography, as well as mathematics and computer programming. Our staff are located at SMHI's offices in Norrk\u00f6ping and Gothenburg.\nThe unit is divided into two groups. The group for which this position is available primarily focuses on marine research concerning Sweden's coastal zone, as well as the Baltic Sea and North Sea. Biogeochemical modeling is an important method in this work.\nAbout the Position\nAs a researcher, you will develop new knowledge about the coastal zone in the present day and in a changing climate, and contribute to ensuring that water management has annually updated foundation data. This involves qualified analyses and computer simulations using numerical ocean models, as well as participation in further developing the model system through implementation and analysis of biogeochemical processes on shorter and longer timescales. Process and impact studies, as well as analyses of model simulations and observations, are part of daily work, as are model development and creation of driving data. The Swedish Coastal Zone Model, observations, and climate simulations will be used for this work.\nThe role also includes presenting your work in various settings, both verbally and in writing, for example through publication in scientific journals, at scientific conferences, and in collaboration with County Administrative Boards, the Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, and Water Authorities. Work is carried out within the framework of national and European research projects as well as Swedish water management, and involves participation in all phases of projects, from planning to implementation and reporting.\nAbout You\nWe are looking for someone with research training in oceanography or other education that SMHI considers equivalent. You must have work authorization to work in Sweden (EU).\nFurther requirements include:\nExperience with programming and handling large datasets\nExperience with analysis, image processing, and statistical programs such as Python or similar\nKnowledge of ocean physics and biogeochemistry\nExperience working with numerical models\n\nIt is highly meritorious to have:\nWorked in Fortran\nKnowledge of coastal zone marine physical and biogeochemical processes\n\nIt is meritorious to have:\nExperience with Linux and\/or Unix\nExperience with Git\nKnowledge of statistical analysis methods\nExperience using and analyzing data from coupled physical-biogeochemical models\nExperience with project work in the form of conducting project applications, project management, and participation in international research networks\nDocumented experience of written and oral scientific publication\n\nAs a person, we see that you have a strong interest in scientific questions in general, and in marine environment and climate issues in particular. You should enjoy working with programming and oceanographic modeling and have drive in your research.\nWe would like to see that you are goal-oriented, engaged, proactive, and enjoy working both independently and with others. You should also be attentive and flexible in your working style and be quality-conscious. You should not hesitate to ask for help and be helpful to others. You should be well-organized with the ability to structure work, both independently and with others, with clear goals and sub-goals, and to meet deadlines.\nThe ability to present your work, thoughts, and ideas in individual meetings and to an audience is important to us, as is speaking clearly, eloquently, and with engagement.\nEmployment Type: Permanent, full-time\nWork Location: Position is at SMHI's offices in Norrk\u00f6ping or Gothenburg. The position may involve travel, both nationally and internationally.\nApplication Deadline: Sunday, October 4, 2026\n\nLearn more about SMHI as a workplace and our offer https:\/\/www.smhi.se\/jobba-pa-smhi\/smhi-som-arbetsplats.
