Welcome to apply for a job with us!\n\nAbout the job\nAs a Research Engineer, you will work with experimental preparation and characterization of thin films and multilayers in Materials Optics at the Division of Thin Film Physics.\n\nThe work includes independent work with DC magnetron sputtering in the coating systems Adam and Jessie. Your tasks include planning and conducting coating experiments, as well as operating, maintaining, troubleshooting, and upgrading the coating and vacuum systems.\n\nA central part of the work is continued development of magnetic reference layers, MRL, for neutron reflectometry. The work builds on previous development of Co- and CoTi-based reference layers and will include development and optimization of SiO2-based capping layers for MRL substrates.\n\nThe work also includes structural characterization of the prepared thin films, primarily through X-ray reflectometry, XRR, and X-ray diffraction, XRD, as well as analysis and modeling of measurement data. Documentation, compilation, and scientific analysis of experimental results are part of your responsibilities. You will also participate in the preparation and writing of scientific publications.\n\nAbout you\nWe are looking for someone with a strong interest in experimental thin film physics who can work independently with advanced laboratory equipment. The tasks require a careful and systematic approach as well as a strong ability to plan, conduct, document, and analyze experimental work.\n\nSince the work involves operation and technical development of advanced vacuum and coating systems, practical problem-solving skills and the ability to independently identify and address technical issues are particularly important.\n\nYou must have:\n- A Master's degree or equivalent degree at an advanced level in technical physics, materials science, nanotechnology, or another field relevant to the position.\n- Documented practical experience with thin film preparation using DC magnetron sputtering.\n- Documented experience with independent work on UHV-based magnetron sputtering systems, including practical experience operating and handling the Jessie coating system at Link\u00f6ping University.\n- Experience with troubleshooting and practical maintenance of vacuum and coating systems.\n- Documented experience with systematic optimization of sputtering parameters such as working pressure, magnetron power, substrate bias, and ion assistance.\n- Experience with preparation and optimization of Co-, Ti-, and CoTi-based thin films and multilayers.\n- Experience with development and characterization of magnetic reference layers for polarized neutron reflectometry.\n- Practical experience with X-ray reflectometry, XRR, for characterization of thin films and interfaces.\n- Experience with analysis and modeling of XRR data using GenX.\n- Experience with X-ray diffraction, XRD, for structural characterization of thin films.\n- Good ability to communicate scientific results orally and in writing in English.\n\nIt is advantageous if you have:\n- Experience with CoTi-based magnetic reference layers and development of protective capping layers.\n- Experience with magnetic characterization using, for example, MOKE or SQUID.\n- Experience with polarized neutron reflectometry and analysis of neutron reflectivity data.\n- Experience working at large-scale neutron research facilities.\n- Experience with scientific article writing and compilation of experimental results for publication.\n\nYour workplace\nYou will work at the Materials Optics Unit in the Division of Thin Film Physics at the Department of Physics, Chemistry and Biology, IFM, at Link\u00f6ping University.\n\nThe activities include research and development in thin film-based X-ray and neutron optics, with a particular focus on preparation and characterization of advanced thin films and multilayers.
