To meet society's need for knowledge about future climate, SMHI's climate research unit Rossby Centre is now seeking another research colleague. We offer a stimulating work environment with extensive external collaborations and flexible working arrangements.\nAt Rossby Centre, knowledge about future climate and its effects is deepened through climate model calculations and advanced data analysis. Work on producing climate information and associated data provides an important foundation for decisions on climate adaptation measures within society and business.\nAbout the Position\nWe are now seeking a researcher with solid scientific expertise in the climate system who wants to work with analysis of high-resolution climate data, underlying physics, and development of new applications. The work includes, among other things, detection and attribution of weather extremes as well as development of statistical analysis methods, including machine learning. The role involves publishing and presenting scientific results, both within the research community and to users of climate information, as well as contributing to research proposals.\nThe work is conducted within various research projects (currently, for example, the \"Destination Earth\" project \"DEODE\"), in collaboration with both work groups within SMHI and other international partners.\nIn the role, you will also contribute to developing so-called storyline-based approaches, methods for ML-supported detection of extreme events, and further development of statistical risk-based methods.\nIn the long term, you will help develop applications of climate models that strengthen SMHI's climate services, with special focus on extreme events, as well as contribute to the continued development of the climate model HCLIM. The work is conducted in close collaboration with colleagues at SMHI and in international collaborations, which provides good opportunities to build networks and develop your communication skills.\nYour Profile\nWe are seeking someone with at least a master's degree from a university or college in climate science, meteorology, atmospheric science, physics, or another related field with relevance to weather or climate.\nYou have a good understanding of the physical aspects of the climate system and climate data and their scientific significance in relation to weather extremes, as well as experience with and ability to analyze climate data. You also have experience working with high-resolution climate data. It is meritorious to have an understanding of attribution of climate events.\nYou have experience applying statistical methods and machine learning methods. You are well versed in working with computing systems based in Linux environments and have programming skills in, for example, Python, Fortran, or Shellscript. Experience with multiple of these languages is meritorious.\nIt is an advantage if you can configure and run numerical models (weather, climate, or similar) on high-performance computing systems.\nGood knowledge of English in speech and writing is required. Knowledge of Swedish is an advantage, and if Swedish knowledge is lacking, a willingness to learn Swedish is requested.\nTo succeed in the role, you are self-driven and initiative-taking with the ability to advance research questions. You work in a structured manner, have strong analytical skills, and deliver results of high quality within given timeframes. Since the work takes place in close collaboration with colleagues at SMHI and international partners, you are a good team player who contributes to a positive and collegial work environment.\nEmployment Type: Permanent\nLocation: Norrk\u00f6ping\nApplication Deadline: 2026-09-24\nWelcome to submit your application.\n \nLearn more about SMHI as a workplace and about our offer: https:\/\/www.smhi.se\/jobba-pa-smhi\/smhi-som-arbetsplats.
